Learn how apprenticeship works in New Brunswick.
From pre-apprenticeship entry options through registration, in-class training, and Red Seal certification.
Thereβs no single path into the trades. Here are the most common entry points for New Brunswick residents.
Find an employer in your trade, get hired, and register your apprenticeship agreement with GNB. No pre-apprenticeship training required for most trades.
NBCC, CCNB, and partner organizations offer pre-apprenticeship programs that provide foundational skills and help connect you with employers.
Have existing trade experience or partial training? Apply for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) to receive credit toward your apprenticeship.
Most trades in New Brunswick follow a multi-level apprenticeship structure combining on-the-job hours with technical training blocks.
Sign an apprenticeship contract with your employer and register with GNBβs Apprenticeship and Occupational Certification branch to officially begin.
Work under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, logging hours and competencies. Youβre a paid employee throughout your apprenticeship.
Complete in-class or online technical training at NBCC, CCNB, or an approved institution at each level of your apprenticeship program.
After completing all levels, write your Certificate of Qualification exam to become a certified journeyperson. Eligible trades can then write the Red Seal exam.
